Burglars Hitting Homes In Lincoln Park, Old Town
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police are warning neighbors in the Lincoln Park and Old Town areas about burglars who have been hitting homes under the cover of night.
A community alert from Near North District police says the burglars are striking houses from Clark Street on the east to Halsted Street on the west, and from Armitage Avenue on the north to Division Street on the south. The zone includes the Old Town neighborhood, much of the Lincoln Park neighborhood, the Sandburg Village development and parts of the old Cabrini-Green area.
Police say the burglars have been striking between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., and have been entering through unlocked doors or windows.
They usually target items they can easily grab and carry off, such as cash, keys, jewelry and electronic equipment, police said.
No description of the burglars is available. Police have not specified how many reports they have received about such incidents.
Police urge everyone to secure windows and doors and not to leave easily-accessible windows open. Also, window screens are not a security measure, police emphasize.
Also, police say if your home has an alarm system, it should be in good working order.
