Buffone: Hanie's Third Pick Was Game-Changer
(WSCR) There were many mistakes in the Bears 25-20 loss to the Raiders on Sunday, but there is one play in particular that sticks out to one Bears expert.
The Bears trailed 9-7 with the ball in the red zone at the close of the second quarter when offensive coordinator Mike Martz called a screen pass. Caleb Hanie ran to the right before throwing across the back field. The pass was ultimately picked off, leading to a Raiders field goal to close out the first half.
"The one play that still irritates me and why I was so hot is that damn screen play down at the end zone," Doug Buffone told The McNeil and Spiegel Show. "I just thought it was a stupid call. It's second-and-one on the 7-yard line with 35 seconds to go and you're down 9-7. The worst-case scenario is you say, 'OK, fine. We'll kick a field goal and the Bears go (into the half) with the lead.' All of the sudden, you turn around and there's an interception. Now, you gotta go into halftime with Hanie with an interception, going down three points. I didn't get that call."
