Buehrle Not As Eager To Retire As He Once Was
CHICAGO (CBS) After hinting at retirement for years, Mark Buehrle may not be ready to give up baseball when his contract expires at the end of this season.
"Once the kids get in school, and they're staying in St. Louis for school, it will be a definite time to hang them up and get home,'' Buehrle told the Chicago Sun-Times Tuesday. "But I think I have a couple more years for that. If it happens, if I do walk away, I could be happy, but I could get home and say, 'What the heck am I doing? I'm not ready to be done.' Then again, I could sign another one-, two-, three-year contract somewhere. Or here and be happy with that. I don't know; it's hard to tell.''
Just the mention of St. Louis brings more speculation that Buehrle would like to pitch for his hometown Cardinals before he retires.
"Obviously, it's hometown,'' Buehrle said. "I would like to put a Cardinal uniform on, but it would be nice to finish where I started. You don't see that very often, where you spend your whole career in one spot.''
Buehrle added that he isn't as set on retiring at the end of his current contract as he was a couple of years ago.
