Buckingham Fountain To Be Closed Off For Lollapalooza

CHICAGO (CBS) -- Much of Grant Park, including Buckingham Fountain, will be closed to the public for until next week as Lollapalooza takes over.

As WBBM Newsradio 780's John Cody reports, the three-day music festival now covers 116 acres of Grant Park up to Buckingham Fountain.

Chicago Park District spokeswoman Jessica Maxey-Faulkner says there is a balancing act between visitors to the fountain and visitors to the festival.

"In the last six years, it's brought in more than 8.2 million to Chicago parks citywide, and just last year, it brought in an estimated $85 million in tourism dollars," Maxey-Faulkner said.

She says some people tried to use fountain tours as cover to sneak into Lollapalooza last year, so now the district will only guide fountain tours before festival hours – from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday through Sunday in Grant Park.

Several other public areas will also closed during Lollapalooza, including a dog park, a skate park and tennis courts at 9th Street and Columbus Drive, according to the Sun-Times Media Wire.

Lollapalooza is on from Friday through Sunday. Tickets for this year are sold out.
