Brutal Cold To Set In As Week Goes On
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Did it feel like a heat wave on Monday with the middle 30s and rain instead of snow?
Don't get used to it, because Old Man Winter will be roaring back with his icy vengeance by the end of the day. And come Friday, Jack Frost will be biting your nose clear off as the temperature plummets to highs in the single-digits and wind chills of minus 25.
As Chicagoans arrived at work on Tuesday, the temperature stood in the lower to mid-30s and light snow was falling. Some areas remained icy, following the sleet and rain that fell on some of the area Monday evening.
To combat the slick conditions on the roads, the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation sent out 174 trucks to patrol side streets and any other locations where the roads may be icy. The plow trucks began their tour of duty at 5:30 a.m.
The snow is expected to stop before noon.
CBS 2 Meteorologist Megan Glaros says over the course of the day, the winds will pick up and gust to as much as 20 mph and the temperature will gradually drop.
Overnight, the low will be about 18 degrees, with wind chills in the single-digits. For Wednesday, the high is a mere 20 degrees.
But the most brutal conditions come Friday. The actual air temperature will only reach about 9 degrees, and while it might actually be about 6 degrees in the morning, wind chills will sink to about minus 25.
On Friday night, the forecast low is just 3 degrees.
