Bruce Bochy Doesn't Yet Reveal Giants Rotation After Johnny Cueto In Game 1
(CBS) Fresh off a win in the NL wild-card game, the Giants on Thursday didn't reveal their pitching rotation for the National League Divisional Series against the Cubs after right-hander Johnny Cueto in Game 1 on Friday.
Ace left-hander Madison Bumgarner, one of the greatest postseason pitchers of all time, threw a complete-game shutout Wednesday, so he's all but certain to throw in Game 3 on Monday on normal rest. As for Game 2 on Saturday at Wrigley Field, Giants manager Bruce Bochy could turn to right-hander Jeff Samardzija (12-11, 3.81 ERA) or left-hander Matt Moore (13-12, 4.08).
Samardzija started once against the Cubs, his former team, this year, taking a no-decision while allowing three runs in just four innings on Sept. 1. Acquired in a midseason trade from the Rays, Moore didn't face the Cubs this season.
Cueto made one start against the Cubs this season, taking a no-decision in allowing one run in seven innings on Sept. 4 at Wrigley Field.
Bumgarner was strong in a pair of starts against the Cubs this season, winning both. He threw 7 2/3 shutout innings of three-hit ball on May 22 at AT&T Park, then tossed six innings of two-run ball on Sept. 3 at Wrigley Field. He had a 1.32 ERA across those two starts.
The Cubs revealed their rotation Tuesday, with left-hander Jon Lester set to go in Game 1. He'll be followed by right-hander Kyle Hendricks in Game 2, right-hander Jake Arrieta in Game 3 and right-hander John Lackey in Game 4, if necessary.
Lester went 1-1 with a 4.63 ERA in 11 2/3 innings across two starts against the Giants this season. Hendricks took a loss in allowing one run in 5 1/3 innings in his lone start against the Giants.
Arrieta was 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA against San Francisco this season, while Lackey took a no-decision in his lone start against the Giants, allowing one run in five innings.
