CPD Supt. David Brown Gives Update Day After Meeting With President Joe Biden On Crime Reduction
CHICAGO (CBS)-- Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown provided an an update a day after meeting with with President Joe Biden at the White House Monday to talk about reducing crime.
While it was expected Brown would discuss the U.S. Department of Justice's "Strike Force" to target gun violence, he didn't go into much about what the force will look like or how it would work.
Consequences for serious crimes was the primary topic discussed between the president and Brown Monday.
"There was an emphasis amongst the group on stopping the flow of illegal guns into our cities is key solving some of the violent crimes that we are seeing," Brown said.
The idea is to strengthen communication between federal, state and local agencies to up the punishment of gun traffickers.
Brown said some of the strategies will be rolled out in the next few days.
On Monday, Brown joined three other police chiefs and other elected and community leaders in a meeting with Biden and Attorney General Merrick Garland; including Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser, San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams, Memphis Police Chief C.J. Davis, Wilmington Police Chief Robert Tracy, Newark Police Lt. Anthony Lima, and Community Based Public Safety Collective co-founder Aqeela Sherrills.
Even as Brown and others met with President Biden on Monday, we know much of the president's suggestions on the topic. He has been encouraging cities to invest some of their COVID-19 relief funds on things like policing and alternative crime reduction steps.
One example is creating summer jobs for teenagers.
Illegal guns are driving Chicago to its deadliest summer in a decade.
At least 48 people were shot over the weekend across Chicago and 11 of them did not survive.
In fact, there's been 96 homicides so far between June 1 and July 4 this year. Almost twice as many as the same stretch in 2011.
When it comes to guns in Chicago this past weekend, Brown says 94 were recovered by CPD and that more than 6,000 guns have been recovered so far this year.
