Tornado Confirmed In Peotone
UPDATED 10/26/10 4:17 p.m.
CHICAGO (CBS) - The National Weather Service confirmed Tuesday afternoon that a tornado touched down in south suburban Peotone as the so-called "Great Lakes Cyclone" battered the region.
Meteorologists from the National Weather Service were out surveying damage from the storms on Tuesday and confirmed that an EF-2 tornado -- a twister with wind speeds of up to 135 mph -- touched down in Peotone. They were also checking storm damage in Chebanse and Elburn and in Kouts, Ind., to determine whether tornadoes touched down in those areas.
The roof was sheared off a house in the 3000 block of Will Center Road between Beecher and Peotone, Will County Sheriff's Office spokesman Pat Barry said. A neighboring farm house was knocked off its foundation.
The Chicago Tribune reported that two children inside were slightly injured.
Several tornado warnings were issued across the area between 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. Those warnings have since expired.
The storms Tuesday morning were the first component of the Great Lakes Cyclone, which will also produce dangerous winds.
