Brenly: Even With Lost Season, Cubs Can't Rush Prospects
(WSCR) The Cubs have the second worst record in baseball, and haven't really been in the NL Central race since back in May. The assumption is that sooner rather than later the team would begin calling up some of it's prospects.
"I think maybe it's a little premature for that," Cubs TV analyst Bob Brenly said on the Danny Mac Show. "I mean, obviously when you have a season that's going in the direction that the Cubs' season has gone, the idea is to get some guys up here, get them some valuable experience at the Major League level, continue to play the young guys that are already on the roster ... with an eye toward the future."

It's been clear for sometime that he Cubs' season was over. And since that became obvious, the fans have been clamoring for the organization to turn the team over to the young players. Brenly agrees with that logic to an extent.
"You don't want to rush guys to the big leagues, maybe, prematurely," he said. "[You don't want to] get them up there in tough situations and have them experience, you know, horrible failure at their first go-round at the Major League level. The most important thing is that you feel that young players are ready to make that next step. And if you don't think they're ready, then you can set their careers back a couple of years if you rush them to the big leagues to quickly, even under the circumstances that we have here on the North Side this summer."
