Brenly: Castro Should Hit Second
At this time last year, Starlin Castro was turning heads in spring training, but wouldn't make his major league debut until May 7. This year he'll be an opening day starter and one of the keys to the Chicago Cubs.
Putting Castro in the starting lineup is one of the easier decisions Mike Quade will have to make in his first year as manager, choosing a leadoff hitter, however, will be much more difficult.
"I'm sure that's something Mike Quade's watching on a daily basis, hoping that somebody will jump up and grab that leadoff spot," Cubs' analyst Bob Brenly said on the Danny Mac Show. "But I think Mike right now is content to leave [Castro] in that two-spot. Starlin has had a real nice spring, he picked up right where he left off last season and he's even showing a little more power this year, which is a great sign.

"But he's just a natural hitter. He's not the guy that you want to go up there and take a lot of pitches and work counts. You want him to maintain his aggressiveness. He's a contact hitter that consistently makes contact and puts the ball into play from foul line to foul line and just gets his hits. That's been his history throughout his minor league career, it's what he did last season. I think for the time being, unless it becomes an absolute emergency that you need somebody to hit in that leadoff spot, I think Star is going to stay in that two-hole."
