Boy Scout Fatally Struck By Vehicle
(CBS) – A long-time Boy Scout is dead after he was hit by a car in south suburban Midlothian.
The crash happened minutes after the 17-year-old received new scout honor for his service.
CBS 2's Audrina Bigos reports.
On Friday, friends and family of Mark Gorman gathered outside Bremen High School, where he was a senior.
"I always told him: Use my life as a checkpoint. and then make it further on, farther on than I was," says Jake Gorman, his older brother.
The two were raised by the same adoptive family.
Mark was manager of the varsity Braves football team and had been a boy scout for seven years.
"He was a good scout," says Peter Grage, his scout master.
Grage and his wife say Mark received Star rank -- given to him for his community service and leadership – on Thursday night before the fatal accident happened.
Minutes after a scout meeting at a church, troop leaders saw flashing lights.
"We had four scouts walk home, and then 5 minutes later we got the phone call that Mark was hit," Serene Grage says.
The teen was hit by a car along 147th at Karlov, taken to the hospital and later died.
"Surgeons came in and were like, 'I'm sorry, we can't do anymore.' I just fell to my knees and I was like that's my younger brother, that's my everything," Jake Gorman says.
