Police say the victim was walking home from school with a group of friends around 2:42 p.m. Wednesday near 49th Street and Ashland Avenue. Someone began following the group in a red sport-utility vehicle, and an unknown male got out carrying a baseball bat, police said.
The suspect chased the victim and swung the bat at him, striking him in the head with it, before going back to the SUV and fleeing the scene.
A friend initially took the teen to Holy Cross Hospital, but he suffered a seizure and was transferred to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said.
He was placed on life support suffering from a cerebral hemorrhage and multiple injuries, police said.
The boy has no criminal history, police said. A motive for the attack was not known early Thursday.
No one is in custody at 5 a.m. and it was not known whether the bat was recovered.
