Boy Admits Role In Fatal Shooting Of 14-Year-Old
LAKE COUNTY, Ind. (STMW) -- A Merrillville teen has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and agreed to accept a gun-related sentencing enhancement in a shooting death of a 14-year-old Merrillville boy in his home.
Matthew Knight, 16, faces up to 13 years for his role in the March 27 killing of Depree Mims, who was shot in the head while he was getting ready to watch a movie with his family.
At about 8:30 p.m., Mims and eight siblings had gathered with their mother in the living room of the family home in the 7500 block of Marshall Street. Mims got up to retrieve a blanket for one of the children when he was shot from a car outside the house.
Knight admitted he acted either individually or in concert with his co-defendants when he fired recklessly into the home.
Three days after the homicide, Knight and co-defendants Anthony Paul Addison, 23, Kevin Dale Brown, 18, and Joshua Nathaniel Addison, 22, all of Merrillville, were charged with murder and criminal gang activity.
In July, Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter dismissed charges against Joshua Addison due to a lack of evidence.
Anthony Addison and Brown have pleaded not guilty.
Lake Superior Court Judge Thomas Stefaniak Jr. took the agreement for Knight under advisement and scheduled a Dec. 6 sentencing hearing.
