CHICAGO (CBS) -- Charges were pending against a driver after a 2-year-old boy was fatally struck by a vehicle Sunday afternoon in the Jefferson Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.
The boy and a 39-year-old woman were struck at 4:11 p.m. by a vehicle traveling south in the 4700 block of North Central Avenue after turning left from westbound Giddings Street, Chicago Police said.
The boy was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner's office. Police initially said the child was a girl.
The woman was taken to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening, police said. Her condition was stabilized.
The driver was taken into custody after the crash and charges were pending Monday morning, police said.
Witnesses at the scene told reporters the vehicle was a white van making a left turn onto Central. A nurse who was nearby when the crash occurred performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived.
