Boy, 17, Charged In Fatal Shooting
CHICAGO (STMW) - A 17-year-old boy was charged Monday in a gang-related shooting last Thursday in the Avondale neighborhood that left one man dead and another critically injured.
Abel Lopez, 17, was charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, police said.
The shooting happened about 1:45 p.m. May 19 in the 3000 block of North California Avenue, police said. Lopez approached two men seated in a vehicle in the parking lot of a laundromat and opened fire. Initial reports said that two assailants fired into the vehicle.
One man was shot in the head and the other was shot multiple times, including in the chest, police said. Both were taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.
One victim -- identified as Jesus Gamboa, 21, was pronounced dead at Masonic at 3:37 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The shootings appear to have been gang-related, police said at the time.
Lopez is expected to appear Tuesday in bond court.
