Boy, 13, Killed By Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound On West Side
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Police are investigating the death of a 13-year-old boy on the city's West Side, who apparently was killed by a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers were first called to the 100 block of South Parkside Avenue, in the South Austin neighborhood, at 10:53 p.m. They found the boy unresponsive inside a bedroom, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.
Authorities determined he suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Gaines said.
Authorities have not determined whether the boy committed suicide, or if he was playing with the gun when it went off, he said.
Police were still interviewing witnesses as of early Friday, Gaines said.
The boy was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Hospital 11:16 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.
An autopsy is scheduled for later Friday at the Cook County Medical Examiner's office
