CHICAGO (STMW) - A 13-year-old boy was shot dead, while a 16-year-old boy was listed in "extremely critical" condition after a Wednesday afternoon shooting in the Marquette Park neighborhood that police believe may be gang-related.
The shooting happened about 4:45 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Sacramento Avenue, police said. A 13-year-old boy was fatally shot in the chest, while a 16-year-old boy was shot in the chest and left side.
Rich Gutierrez, of 6144 S. Francisco Ave., was pronounced dead at the scene, the Cook County Medical Examiner's office said. The boy apparently suffered multiple gunshot wounds, but an autopsy is scheduled for Thursday to confirm the cause of death.
The other teen was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in "extremely critical" condition, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Quention Curtis said.
Both teens were walking on the street when two people approached them. One person took out a handgun and fired, striking both of the teens, police said.
The shooting may be gang-related and police remained at the scene Wednesday night.
Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
