Bowen: Talent Beats Character In NFL
(WSCR) The Bears may have gotten more than they bargained for when they traded two third round picks to the Dolphins for wide receiver Brandon Marshall.
A three-time Pro Bowler, Marshall's on-the-field accomplishments speak for themselves. Unfortunately for the Bears, his off-the-field trouble speaks for itself, as well.
Still, one NFL expert thinks that in the NFL, talent will always outweigh character.
"I think it kind or proves or confirms what everyone already knows," Matt Bowen of the National Football Post told The Mully and Hanley Show. "The character talk in the NFL, I've never agreed with it, because talent always wins. Brandon Marshall, why has he been on three teams? Because he has issues, but he keeps getting that next chance, that next opportunity. The reason he does is because he is a No. 1 wide receiver. He can be press-man, he can beat Cover-2. This is the type of guy that when you put him on the field, opposing defensive back have to worry about him all week. This guy is so talented that you'll put a different colored jersey on the player representing him on the scout team because you have to know where he is at all times on the field. With that comes a lot of risk.

"I know that the new Bears GM Phil Emery, when he came out in his initial press conference, said he values character. Then he goes and makes this move. It just goes back to what I've always believe and what I saw in my career: The best guys get the most opportunities no matter what type of issues they have off the field."
