Bowen: Change In Defensive Scheme Proves Effective
(WSCR) One thing that has changed during the Bears' current four-game win streak is the type of defensive coverages in the secondary.
Under head coach Lovie Smith, the Bears typically have employed the Cover 2 defensive scheme. Over the past four games, however, the Bears have switched things up, using different zone and man coverages.
"What Lovie and (defensive coordinator) Rod Marinelli are doing is using a good mix of scheme," Matt Bowen of The National Football Post and Chicago Tribune told The McNeil and Spiegel Show on Wednesday. "When you use a good mix of scheme, the offense has to play honest. They can't just drill Cover 2. They have to adjust their routes. Pro wide receivers, if they're running a route that's designed to beat Cover 2 and they see Cover 1, they have to adjust their route on the fly. The quarterback then has to be on the same page. It could cause them some confusion in that offensive game plan."
