Bowen: Bears Safeties Need To Get It Together
(WSCR) It's safe to say Panthers wide receiver Steve Smith enjoys playing against the Bears.
The Bears may have won Sunday, but Smith torched the Bears secondary for 181 yards on eight catches as the defense surrender 543 yards of total offense to the Panther.
Not excluded from the struggling secondary is the recently-acquired Brandon Meriweather, who will likely receive one, if not two, fines from the league after leading with his helmet on two different hits.
"You start with Meriweather," Matt Bowen of The National Football Post told The Boers and Bernstein Show on Monday. " I'll be honest, because this is how I was coached, when I played in Washington with Greg Williams, – you guys know I talk about him a lot and have a lot of respect for him -- if I would've missed a tackle in the open field and blew a coverage on a deep pass, I would have been standing on the sidelines with my helmet. That's how quick we got pulled when I was playing in Washington. Greg did it to Sean Taylor, too. He did it to everyone. It did matter how much money you made or where you were at on the depth chart. If you couldn't be accountable and play the technique of the defense, your butt was on the sidelines. If I'm coaching, I would've done the same thing yesterday. They don't have very good play at the safety position right now, and that's part of the problem."

Bowen also pointed to Major Wright, who has struggled in coverage greatly this season.
"I know Major Wright is a young player, but you're making NFL money now," Bowen said. "You have to start making some big-time plays. If they don't get plays from their secondary, especially their safety position, they're not going to be Detroit."
