Bond Set At $500,000 In Suburban Cocaine Arrest
WAUKEGAN, Ill. (STMW) - A north suburban man was ordered held on $500,000 bond Thursday after being arrested with a kilogram of cocaine Thursday night in Waukegan.
Deputies of the Lake County Sheriff's Warrant's Division performed a traffic stop about 9:15 p.m. Wednesday on an older-model black Toyota Celica near Belvidere Road (Route 120) and Jackson Street in Waukegan, according to a release from the Lake County Sheriff's office.
Sheriff's police stopped the car after motorist Adrian Cazares-Maravilla, 23, made an abrupt stop, the release said. When deputies approached, they could smell a strong odor of what appeared to be burnt cannabis coming from the vehicle.
The deputies instructed Cazares-Maravilla, of Waukegan, to exit the vehicle for a field sobriety tests and he suddenly pushed his arm against his jacket in an attempt to hide something, the release said.
As deputies assisted Cazares-Maravilla from the car they noticed a rectangular package he was attempting to hold to his side and further investigation determined it was one kilogram of cocaine with a street value of about $120,000, the release said.
Cazares-Maravilla was charged with one count of possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and improper stopping, the release said. If convicted he faces up to 30 years in prison.
Lake County Judge Raymond Collins set bond at $500,000 Friday morning, the release said. He is next scheduled to appear in court March 24.
"This is another substantial amount of Cocaine that has been removed from Lake County Streets," said Chief of Administration Wayne S. Hunter. "It is a great thing for police officers when a simple traffic stop or DUI stop can turn into a quality drug bust. We are very proud of the job our deputies did on this and many other cases."
