Body Found On Street Could Be Man Who Fled Crash Scene
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A man's body was found on a Southwest Side street Monday morning and police are investigating whether he is the same man spotted running from the scene of a fatal crash on the same street early Thursday.
The man, believed to be either 29 or in his early 30s, was found about 11:30 a.m. in the 4000 block of South Cicero Avenue, police News Affairs Officer Michael Sullivan said.
That's the same block where a 2004 Ford Taurus struck a bridge that crosses the Chicago Sanitary Ship Canal at 2:23 a.m. Thursday.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found the car flipped upside down and resting between the main section of the bridge and the railing, police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
Pipers Wells, 33, of 1054 N. Massasoit Ave., was dead on the scene, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
It was not immediately known if Wells was a passenger in or the driver of the Taurus, Mirabelli said. But witnesses reported seeing a man running from the wreckage.
Police on Monday said the police Major Accident Investigation Unit was investigating whether the man found dead may be the man spotted running from the fatal crash.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office could not immediately confirm the fatality Monday morning.
