BLUE ISLAND, Ill. (STMW) -- A body found in the Cal-Sag Channel in Blue Island on Monday has been identified as Kelvin Washington, authorities with the Illinois State Police said today.
Washington drowned, officials with the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office said. But police officials are still investigating his death to determine what happened.
The body was discovered by a boater on Monday afternoon in the water near 132nd Street and Ashland Avenue, according to Blue Island Fire Chief Bob Copp. The fire department responded to the call which came in around 10:13 a.m. and helped retrieve the body, Copp said. But the investigation was turned over to Illinois State Police when they arrived, he said.
According to State Trooper Clare Pfotenhauer, Washington was identified on Wednesday by relatives. Pfotenhauer said she didn't know the age of the man but believed he was born in 1985. She said Washington had been reported missing on April 22nd. Because he was reported missing in Chicago, the investigation has been turned over to the Chicago Police department, Pfotenhauer said.
