Boats Knocked Off Moorings Near Museum Campus
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Several boats moored in Lake Michigan near the Museum Campus were knocked loose Wednesday night amid strong winds and high waves.
Chicago police said several boats came loose from their moorings and began crashing into the concrete wall along the lakefront of the Museum Campus around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday.
A total of 17 boats were damaged or destroyed near the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium. Eight of the boats sunk.
Authorities spent the night trying to secure several of the boats. Several boats were floating in the water on Friday morning.
A high wind warning has been issued through Thursday morning and waves on Lake Michigan were as high as 25 feet at times, prompting officials to close parts of the lakefront to visitors.
