Blue Line Train Hits, Kills Deer In Middle Of Kennedy Expressway

CHICAGO (CBS) -- A deer found its way onto the CTA rail tracks in the middle of the Kennedy Expressway early Wednesday, only to be struck and killed by a train.
The Blue Line train, headed to O'Hare, struck and killed a deer near the Cumberland station around 3:15 a.m., Chicago Transit Authority spokeswoman Catherine Hoskinski said.

Blue Line trains were halted for 13 minutes after the accident, Hosinski said.
Crews responded to remove the deer's carcass and trains are running normally again by 4 a.m., Hosinski said.
Meanwhile, the State of Illinois says the number of deer hit by cars and trucks was down 9 percent last year. The state says there were more than 17,000 car crashes involving deer – the lowest number since 1999.
