Blue Demons Have Easy Season Opener
(WSCR) - The DePaul Blue Demons defeated Chicago State for their season opener. This earned DePaul's new coach Oliver Purnell his first win at DePaul also.
CHICAGO (AP) Five players scored in double figures Sunday as DePaul breezed to a 114-81 victory over Chicago State in the Blue Demons' season opener.
The victory was the first at DePaul for new coach Oliver Purnell.
Playing a rare home game on campus, DePaul never trailed and shot 80 percent in the first eight minutes, opening a double-digit lead at 28-17 and never looking back.
Reserve Tony Freeland scored a game-high 21 points as DePaul topped 100 for the first time in nearly five years. Mike Stovall and Cleveland Melvin each scored 19 points, Jeremiah Kelly had 12 and Brandon Young added 11.
The visiting Cougars (1-1) were led by 15 points from Christian Wall while Hajji Martin and Jonathan Montgomery each had 14.
