Blizzard 2011: Will Chicago Public Schools Close?

CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Public school system is operating on a normal schedule on Tuesday, and officials will continue to monitor the oncoming snowstorm before deciding whether to cancel classes on Wednesday.
Chicago rarely closes its schools--the last time was in 1999 in the aftermath of the Jan. 1-3 storm that dumped about 21 inches of snow. A decision on school closings is likely to happen on Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

In a letter to parents that was sent home on Monday, CPS said some bus service may experience delays on Tuesday as the storm begins to hit the city in the afternoon.
As to whether classes will be canceled on Wednesday, CPS said, "Any decisions will be communicated to parents and students through automated telephone calls, the news media and the 311 center."
CPS also said residents can call the Student Safety hotline at 773-553-3335.
Late Tuesday morning, CPS announced that all after-school programs would be canceled Tuesday and Wednesday, and all special education students -- but no others -- would be dismissed early on Tuesday.
