Blackhawks Recall Teuvo Teravainen, Place Patrick Kane On LTIR
(CBS) The Blackhawks announced Wednesday that they've recalled forward Teuvo Teravainen from AHL Rockford and assigned defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk to the Icehogs. Additionally, Chicago has placed Patrick Kane on the long-term injured reserve after he suffered an upper-body injury in Tuesday's win.
Kane's injury occurred early in the first period when he was cross-checked by Florida defenseman Alex Petrovic as the Blackhawks winger was losing his balance. The hit resulted in a Chicago power play, which ended with Jonathan Toews netting a goal to give his team a 1-0 lead.
The Blackhawks weren't pleased with the hit, but as of Wednesday afternoon, Petrovic hadn't been disciplined by the league.
"You're really ticked off when a player like him gets hurt," Blackhawks winger Kris Versteeg said. "It's never good that way. Hopefully he's OK. If he's out for a while, we'll have to have a guy step up and play their best in his absence."
Kane going on the LTIR means he has to miss at least 10 games and 24 days. Teams can then keep the a player on the LTIR longer. The Blackhawks have given no timetable for Kane's return, but reports indicate he may miss up to 10 weeks.
Kane had been putting together his best NHL season yet. Entering Tuesday's game, he was tied for the NHL lead in points with 64, along with Washington's Nicklas Backstrom.
After inconsistent play earlier this year, Teravainen will be asked to do more. Teravainen has recorded four points (two goals, two assists) in 15 games with the Blackhawks. He recorded 25 points (six goals, 19 assists) in 39 games at Rockford.
With Kane on the LTIR, some cap relief could be used by Blackhawks general manager Stan Bowman to facilitate a trade in advance of Monday's trade deadline.
The Blackhawks return to action tomorrow against the Florida Panthers. Puck drop is set for 6:30 p.m.
