Biggs: Pressure Shifts To Smith
(WSCR) Few can argue with the job new general manager Phil Emery has done in his first season with the Bears.
Emery has landed a big-time wide receiver, locked up Pro Bowl running back Matt Forte with a long-term contract and drafted a host of players to aid in all phases. Now, the pressure rests on head coach Lovie Smith to win with what the GM has gotten him.
"It's up to Lovie now," Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune told The Mully and Hanley Show. "He's a coach that has made the playoffs once in the last two years, the way he looks at it, and once out of the last five years the way the rest of us look at it. I don't know of an NFL coach that goes to the playoffs once out of every six years and keeps his job. So, Lovie Smith is going to have to perform for his new boss, Phil Emery."

Biggs said both Smith and quarterback Jay Cutler have to step up now that they've been given the weapons to succeed.
"If you look at it, the quarterback has gotten everything he's wanted this offseason, and the head coach has gotten everything he's wanted this offseason," Biggs said. "The quarterback has a contract that expires after the 2013 season, so he's playing for his future here. The head coach obviously is in a must-win situation. Those two guys have got to go out and perform to secure their future in a bright way."
