Biggs: Lovie Smith Still Needs To Earn Lucrative Contract
(WSCR) Though Lovie Smith still has another full season left on his contract, as is such with the NFL, talk of a possible extension for the head coach is already going on.
Smith, who signed a two-year contract extension after the 2010 season, adding two years to the final year of his old deal, has led the Bears to a 5-1 start in 2012.
Regardless of the Bears record and recent success, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune thinks Smith has yet to earn a lucrative, long-term deal.
"Here's the thing," Biggs told The Mully and Hanley Show," you can't low ball Lovie Smith based on what the guy has done the previous five seasons, which was appear in the playoffs one year. He's gotta coach to prove that he deserves this upper echelon of pay in the National Football League."

For Biggs, it all boils down to playoff appearances and Super Bowl runs.
"From where I sit evaluating this thing, that's just my opinion, that's how you judge these coaches," he said. "Who is in the postseason? Who has gone regularly? Who is competing for a Super Bowl on an annual basis? That hasn't been the Chicago Bears. He's got an opportunity to certainly bolster his resume in a big way this season. They're off to a heck of a start at 5-1."
