Biggs: Bears Need To 'Hit' With First Pick
(WSCR) Here's a message to Phil Emery: If you want to further win over your fan base, simply draft a player with the No. 19 pick who will have an immediate impact on the team.
You'd have to go back to 2007 and Greg Olsen to find a Bears first-round draft pick who truly contributed in his first season with the team -- something Chicago Tribune football writer Brad Biggs said needs to change in the 2012 Draft.
"The point I'm trying to make is that while I believe they need a defensive end with the first pick, I'm not going to be fixated on that," Biggs said during the Bears Roundtable Discussion last night. "I think what they really need, what's most paramount here, is that whatever position the player is at No. 19, or whoever the first pick is, he's gotta make it. OK, he's gotta provide an impact for you, and he's gotta do it quickly. Whatever position he's at, he's gotta come in and deliver for you.

Biggs: Bears Need To 'Hit' With First Pick
The Bears 2011 first-round draft pick Gabe Carimi missed most of his first season in the NFL with a knee injury. Biggs said it really doesn't matter which way the team goes with the No. 19 pick, they just need someone to produce in 2012.
"Ideally, you're going to get some type of participation, some value from your second-round, and maybe your third-round pick pretty quickly," Biggs said. "These player need to come in and fill roles. We can argue over, 'Yeah, they really need a defensive end' or 'Boy, they should go offensive line' or 'Hey, how about another play-maker at wide receiver' but the bottom line, in my opinion, is they've gotta hit. That's been the problem here. They haven't had these hits at the top of the draft."
