Biggs: Bears Growing Thin On O-Line

(WSCR) The Bears 37-13 trouncing of their divisional foe Lions on Sunday wasn't all smiles.

In the wake of the victory, Bears lineman Chris Williams was taken from the game with a hand injury, ultimately having emergency surgery during the second half. With rookie tackle Gabe Carimi also undergoing knee surgery earlier in the week, the Bears offensive line is at a point where it can't afford any more injuries moving forward.

The Bears must now decide how to replace Williams, who could be headed to the injured reserve list.

"They have to sign someone to just get someone in the building if they make a roster move with Chris Williams and place him on injured reserve, which would not surprise me at all," Brad Biggs of The National Football Post and Chicago Tribune told The Mully and Hanley Show. "Do you go out and get some guy you're not familiar with or do you promote one of your three offensive lineman off the practice squad right now? I would think they will probably go the practice squad route. I would expect Edwin Williams, who replaced Chris Williams in the second half of the game, to be the man at left guard. But they're getting right close to the point where they just can't take on any injuries on the offensive line and expect to function at an even decent rate."

The offensive line was serviceable in the Bears' win, but failed to block for the run game and create a stable pocket for Jay Cutler.

"It wasn't the best game by the offensive line yesterday, certainly they cleaned up the false start problems that were an issue when they faced the Lions last month over in Detroit, but (they were) unable to run the football particularly in the perimeter with Matt Forte," Biggs said. "He had 18 carries for 64 yards and 40 of those came on one play."
