Bicyclist Struck, Killed By Truck In Noble Square
CHICAGO (STMW) -- A bicyclist was killed when he was struck by a truck in the Noble Square neighborhood Wednesday morning.
The accident happened about 10 a.m. at West Augusta Boulevard and North Ashland Avenue, police said. The truck and the bicyclist were traveling west on Augusta when the truck made a right turn onto Ashland and struck the bicycle, police News Affairs Officer Veejay Zala said.
The man, who was riding a red mountain bike, was run over by the truck's rear tires, according to police and a witness.
"The bike's rear tire was bent in half," said Dawn Oswalt, who works at a corner store yards from the accident.
"A customer this morning told me the man received CPR before he was taken away in an ambulance," she said.
The truck driver, Danny Darling, 47, of Michigan City, Ind., was issued a citation for making an improper right turn, Zala said.
The cyclist, who was unidentified as of late afternoon, was pronounced dead at 10:35 a.m., according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
The police investigation is ongoing, Zala said.
