Better Business Bureau: Even In Love, Buyer Beware
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Ahead of Valentine's Day on Saturday, the Better Business Bureau was warning about scammers who prey on people looking for love.
"I can't tell you how embarrassed I am," said a Hanover Park woman who asked to remain anonymous.
Last year, she signed up with a Schaumburg dating service, which made all kinds of promises, and pressured her to join. It was only after she handed over $5,000 that she realized she had been misled.
"Finally, I got to see the website, and it was nothing like what I was sold. There were not thousands. There was maybe 100," she said. "Most of them were unavailable. They were either in relationships, or this or that."
After trying unsuccessfully to get a refund, she filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. She said she's sure there must be some legitimate matchmaking services, but is now too spooked to try again.
She warned with love, as with anything else, it's buyer beware.
