As of Monday, there were just nine finalists in the running, and many of them were about what one would expect, such as "On the Road Again" by Willie Nelson. But some seem like strange choices, such as "The Rainbow Connection," sung by Jim Henson as Kermit the Frog.
Also on the list are of finalists are "I Get Around" by the Beach Boys, "I Want You to Want Me" by Cheap Trick, "One Way or Another" by Blondie, "Take It Easy" by the Eagles, "American Pie" by Don McLean, "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf, and "Runnin' Down a Dream" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers – which actually has a lyric to singing along to a road trip song (the song referenced is "Runaway" by Del Shannon.)
Some readers were apparently angry that "Radar Love" by Golden Earring didn't make the list of nine finalists. One reader told the Daily Herald that it was "kind of pathetic" that "The Rainbow Connection" made the list when "Radar Love" did not.
And as for "American Pie," the Daily Herald says, "Love it or hate it, everyone knows the chorus." But how many people are singing the lyrics correctly about the jester borrowing a coat from James Dean and Jack Flash sitting on a candlestick? That will have to remain a mystery.
