Best Places To Cut Your Own Christmas Tree In The Chicago Area

Deck the halls and decorate your home with a real Christmas tree this year. But don't just stop at the first parking lot you see that's filled with pre-cut Christmas trees for sale. Instead, consider bundling up and heading out for a bit of a road trip to farms that let you cut your own tree. You don't need to drive that far, though. With the following list, you can drive within about an hour of Chicago and find a farm where you can cut your own tree. Before you head out the door, give the tree farm a quick phone call so you can be assured it still has trees for sale. With eight varieties of Christmas trees, including White Pine, Scotch Pine and Colorado Spruce, you'll likely find what you want at Bengtson Christmas Tree Farm. Staff at the tree farm can shake and wrap your tree, and retrieve your tree from the field. You and your family can also warm up with a cup or two of hot chocolate. Don't forget to visit the farm's own reindeer.

Larson's Family Farm, located just over an hour east of Chicago, offers six varieties of Christmas trees, including Norway spruce and Scotch pine. The cut-your-own tree farm can shake your tree, too, and you can warm up by sipping on apple cider. Antiques, holiday decor and gifts are also available for purchase. Head out to suburban Lily Lake (it's about 45 minutes northwest of Naperville) and cut your own Christmas tree at Lee's Trees. Trees are available for purchase until December 21, 2014, or until the selection of trees for sale is gone. Trees range in size from about four feet to nine feet, so you're sure to find a tree that will fit in your house or apartment. You can choose and harvest your tree, or pick out a pre-cut tree. Holiday decorations are available for purchase, and you can fill up on a number of treats like hot chocolate and homemade cookies. Lee's Tree is also pet-friendly.

Located about one hour from Chicago and near Rockford, Nature's Best Trees offers eight different types of Christmas trees that you can cut. You can also get a head start on your holiday shopping, as Nature's Best Trees has an assortment of wreaths, baskets and other items for your home or for a loved one. While you're there, pick up some honey for your holiday cooking and baking, too. The farm is open through December 21, 2014; for hours, check out the website. Dogs are allowed, but must be kept on a leash.

Hop in the car and drive about an hour northwest of Chicago to Pioneer Tree Farm in suburban McHenry. Whether you want a pine, spruce, fir or other type of tree, Pioneer Tree Farm has a wide selection that will fit your needs. The farm also has plenty of family-friendly activities, including a wagon ride out to the trees and plenty of hot drinks on hand. Your purchase can also help the environment, with 10 percent of the farm's tree sales donated to the Environmental Defenders of McHenry County. Trees are $45, and only cash and checks are accepted.
