Berry Chill Closes State Street Shop
CHICAGO (CBS) - The local frozen yogurt chain Berry Chill has closed its flagship location on State Street in River North.
The main Berry Chill at 635 N. State St. is now closed, following a dispute with the landlord about the building, according to Crain's Chicago Business.
Chief Executive Officer Michael Farah told the newspaper the store might reopen or move elsewhere on State Street.
Berry Chill has been under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since April, following the opening of Loop locations that have done poor business, Crain's reported. A location at 132 N. LaSalle St. closed in July, while two more – at 225 N. Michigan Ave. and in the Ogilvie Transportation Center at 500 W. Madison St. – remain open, Crain's reported.
Berry Chill touts itself as an all-natural yogurt bar. When CBS 2's Vince Gerasole visited in July 2008, he explained that the product at Berry Chill isn't the ice cream-substitute frozen yogurt that was the rage among the calorie conscious circa 1990. Rather, it is chilled yogurt – an all-natural and fat free concoction with all the healthy live and active cultures you find in a regular grocery store yogurt cup.
Berry Chill also offers an assortment of rotating flavors and exotic toppings such as starfruit, papaya and mochi.
The State Street shop was open until 4 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
