Bernie Sanders Says His Campaign Didn't Organize Protests That Cancelled Donald Trump's Chicago Rally
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders dismissed accusations made by Republican Donald Trump blaming his supporters for protests that led to the cancellation of a rally at UIC Friday.
Trump told his supporters on Saturday that the protests were a "planned attack" and on Twitter, said that supporters of Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton were behind the protest.
In a statement on Saturday, Sanders said his campaign was not behind the protests.
"What caused the violence at Trump's rally is a campaign whose words and actions have encouraged it on the part of his supporters," Sanders said.
Speaking to supporters in St. Louis on Saturday, Hillary Clinton said, "The ugly, divisive rhetoric we are hearing from Donald Trump and the encouragement he has given to violence and aggression is not only wrong, it's dangerous."
Trump's Republican competitors Marco Rubio, John Kasich and Ted Cruz have also criticized Trump's language in wake of the cancelled rally and protests.
