Berlin Sworn In As DuPage State's Attorney
WHEATON, Ill. (STMW) -- DuPage County has a new top prosecutor after county board members on Tuesday unanimously approved Robert Berlin to succeed former state's attorney Joseph Birkett.
Berlin, 48, a career prosecutor, was sworn in as state's attorney immediately after county board members approved his nomination by an 18-0 vote.
After serving for six years in the office, Berlin steps in to replace Birkett, who was sworn in Monday as an Illinois Appellate Court justice.
"I will work as hard as I can to ensure the office maintains its reputation,'' said Berlin, who has worked as a prosecutor for 23 years, including stints in Cook and Kane counties.
"I love coming to work every day because I believe in what we do in representing victims of crime,'' he added.
He was one of seven candidates to apply for the state's attorney's post when Birkett was named to fill a vacancy in the Illinois Appellate Court's 2nd District.
Newly elected DuPage County Board Chairman Daniel Cronin selected Berlin from among the applicants to serve the remainder of Birkett's term, which runs until 2012.
