Bench Player Lillibridge Makes The Most Of His Start

CHICAGO (WSCR) -- The Chicago White Sox have played 10 games this season, but bench player Brent Lillibridge has nine total at-bats on the season. Even with so few plate appearances, Lillibridge was able to achieve a milestone for the franchise.

In the fifth inning of Monday night's loss to the Oakland A's, in his second at-bat of the game, Lillibridge hit the 10,000 home run in White Sox history. While he doesn't play every day, Lillibridge has been making the most of his opportunities, but that doesn't make coming off the bench any easier.

"In the American League, it's a tough thing being a bench player," Lillibridge said on the Danny Mac Show. "Especially not being in a full rotation. My role, so far, has just been against lefty starters, which is fine. Just getting in there once a week, just to contribute, whether or not it's going to be more defense than anything, playing once a week is a tough thing in this league."

But Lillibridge isn't complaining, he knows the opportunity he's getting at the relative young age of 27, and the better he plays, the more likely he'll find more plate appearances down the road.

"Just being able to contribute at all has been great," Lillibridge said. "Especially at the start of the season, you know get off on a good foot for me personally, and just kind of carry it through the rest of the year."

And as he makes clear, it's one thing to be a bench player on a last place team, and a whole other story when you're coming off the bench for a team with as much talent as the White Sox.

"We're stacked," Lillibridge said. "There's nothing to say other than that, we have a great team."
