Bears' Williams Has Inside Track To Handle Return Duties
(CBS) In an interview with the Mully and Hanley Show on Monday morning, Bears general manager Phil Emery indicated Chris Williams has the inside track to handle return duties for Chicago this season.
The kick returner and punt returner jobs are open following the departure of Devin Hester to Atlanta. A 26-year-old out of New Mexico State who was on the Saints' practice squad after previously spending time in the CFL, Williams is 5-foot-8 and 175 pounds, and his speed and elusiveness intrigue Emery, who compared the acquisition of him to using a middle-round draft pick on him.
"Typically in the third and fourth round of the NFL Draft, all the returners are gone," Emery said. "And Chris Williams would fit exactly into that category."
"We're obviously going to give him that full opportunity (to win the job). But we're going to continue to put competition up against him, and we're going to continue to look for competition.
"He's a player a player we feel like has a lot of speed and (potential) production that we're excited about."
Williams will also battle for playing time as a reserve receiver.
