Bears icon Steve McMichael celebrated at Chicago fundraising party
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Football, friendship, and fundraising—that is how organizers described a watch party Monday night that raised money for Bears legend Steve "Mongo" McMichael.
The Hall-of-Famer has been battling ALS. The fundraiser Monday night is also intended to raise awareness about the disease.
"Giving saves lives, and it helps individuals live whatever life they have left to its fullest," said former Chicago Bear and McMichael teammate Bruce Herron. "So we appreciate everything you can do to help those folks afflicted with ALS."
This was the sixth Monday Night Live Watch Party. Each one has featured a different past or present Bears player, and raised money for a different charity.
The events Monday night at Joe's on Weed Street, 940 W. Weed St., featured a live broadcast of Monday Night Football game as the Baltimore Ravens took on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
McMichael played for the Bears from 1981 until 1993. In 1985, the first of three straight all-pro seasons at defensive tackle, McMichael helped lead the Bears to their only Super Bowl title to date—recording a sack against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX.
In 2021, McMichael revealed he was battling ALS. Three years later, McMichael, along with family and friends who had for years pushed for it, celebrated Mongo getting elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
