Bears Sign CB Johnthan Banks, Place QB Jay Cutler On IR

By Chris Emma--

(CBS) Constantly searching to add roster value, the Bears on Monday brought in a young player who came to the league with high upside.

Johnthan Banks, an All-American cornerback at Mississippi State and second-round pick in 2013, has been claimed by the Bears from the Lions, a move now official on the league's transaction wire. The team placed quarterback Jay Cutler on injury reserve, as stated last week.

Drafted by the Bucs in the second round in 2013, Banks intercepted three passes in his rookie season and four the next. However, he doesn't have a pick since. Banks was traded to the Lions a month ago and was released recently.

Where Banks plays with the Bears remains to be seen. He will be coached by veteran defensive backs coach Ed Donatell.

Cutler had surgery Saturday to repair his torn labrum. Given his contract situation, it's possible that his Bears career is over.

Additionally, linebacker Lamin Barrow and quarterback Josh Woodrum were waived, and the Bears signed receiver Bralon Addison to the practice squad.

The Bears (3-9) return to work on Wednesday as they prepare to play the first-place Lions (8-4) in Detroit on Sunday.
