Bears Sign Campbell As Backup QB
CHICAGO (CBS) -- The Chicago Bears have signed free agent quarterback Jason Campbell to a one-year deal.
Campbell, 30, has started 70 games in the NFL, during six seasons with the Washington Redskins and Oakland Raiders. He has an 82.8 career passer rating.
He has completed 1,296 of his 2,131 pass attempts, for a 60.8 completion percentage. He has 74 touchdown passes and 50 interceptions.
Campbell also has 1,068 rushing yards on 218 attempts, with six touchdowns.
The Bears had been shopping for a veteran quarterback to serve as Jay Cutler's backup.
After Cutler went down for the season with a broken thumb, backup Caleb Hanie struggled as the starter. The Bears signed Josh McCown off the street after Cutler went down and, though he didn't put up spectacular numbers, he helped the team end a five-game losing streak in the final game of the season. Hanie started the first four of those losses.
Hanie is not expected to return next season, though McCown could stay as the third-string quarterback.
