Bears' Robbie Gould Makes No Excuses For Latest Miss
By Chris Emma--
CHICAGO (CBS) -- Bears kicker Robbie Gould knows it's part of the game. For the second straight week, he had to stand before reporters and address a crucial late missed field goal, this one a 50-yard try with 1:40 left that would've tied the game in an eventual 24-21 loss to Washington on Sunday afternoon at Soldier Field.
"I just pushed it right," Gould said. "I don't know what to tell you."
One week ago, Gould had a 36-yard field goal attempt that would've beaten the 49ers at Soldier Field. This Sunday, his shot at redemption in the south end zone went the opposite direction -- wide right.
The Bears set up Gould well, with quarterback Jay Cutler hitting receiver Alshon Jeffery down the left sidelines for a 50-yard completion. But when the drive stalled, Gould was set up at the 33-yard line for a chance to tie the game.
Gould again stood at his locker and made no excuses for his costly misses.
"I was excited," Gould said. "I live for that moment, I enjoy that moment. I was excited to go out there and do what I had done all week in my preparation getting ready to make that field goal. The guys did a great job getting it into range. I just didn't execute."
What frustrated Gould even more was knowing that he put in extra work this week in practice and hit the refresh button on his mindset. He was fully prepared for a chance to help his team.
But when Gould unleashed the boot to tie the game, it went a different direction and brought the same result.
"It's unfortunate that it's come to two games where there were pivotal kicks," Bears coach John Fox said. "Unfortunately, we came up a little short and didn't connect on it."
