Bears Place TE Zach Miller On IR, Sign QB David Fales

By Chris Emma--

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) -- The Bears on Wednesday began picking up the pieces from a costly weekend to their football team, signing quarterback David Fales off the Ravens' practice squad and placing tight end Zach Miller on injury reserved.

The third-year player drafted by the Bears, Fales was cut by the team in September. The Bears signed Matt Barkley instead, and Fales landed with the Ravens. Now, Fales returns to add depth at quarterback, with Chicago expecting starter Jay Cutler to miss time with a shoulder injury. NFL Media reported that Cutler suffered a torn labrum in the loss to the Giants on Sunday.

Miller suffered a broken right foot in Sunday's game, as confirmed immediately after the game. He's dealt with a series of injuries during his NFL career, which led to three straight missed seasons from 2012-'14. Miller returned in 2015 and played 15 games, only missing Week 17.

The Bears also signed linebacker Jonathan Anderson to the active roster, adding depth with Jerrell Freeman suspended for four games. Lineman Lawrence Okoye and defensive end Jimmy Staten were also signed to the practice squad.

Most notably, Cutler didn't get submitted to season-ending IR on Wednesday. The Bears were seeking follow-up opinions on what's been reported as a torn labrum.

Bears coach John Fox will provide further details to the team's health after practice on Wednesday at Halas Hall.
