Bears Hire Jeremy Bates As QB Coach

(CBS) The Bears hired Jeremy Bates Tuesday as the team's quarterbacks coach.

Bates worked with Jay Cutler for three years in Denver, including the 2008 season when the quarterback threw for a Broncos' franchise record 4,526 yards en route to the Pro Bowl. Overall, Cutler threw for 9,024 yards, 54 touchdowns and 37 interceptions in 37 starts while Bates was there.

"He was very vital in my growth and my experience as a quarterback there," Cutler told ChicagoBears.com. "The last couple years he had full control of my development and our plays coming in.

"He's a grinder. He's a guy that's going to work extremely hard to find weaknesses in defenses and he's going to be able to present it to us in a way that we understand and will be able to make plays where we can take advantage of those weaknesses."

Bates spent the 2009 season coaching at USC before becoming the offensive coordinator in Seattle in 2010. He did not coach in 2011.

The Bears did not give Bates the title of "passing game coordinator" in their official announcement.
