Bears Considering Cubs' Management Model
(CBS) After firing general manager Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman on Monday morning, the Bears are considering restructuring their management to model that of the Cubs', The Score's Dan Bernstein reported, in which there would be a team president to run the business side of the organization and another president to hold supreme power over football decisions.
That would mean a lateral move to the business side for Bears president Ted Phillips, who has a background in accounting but has had oversight in football operations. Critics believe his lack of football experience has hurt the Bears, who have drafted poorly in recent years and have troubling contractual obligations to some big-name players.
The Cubs' model has Theo Epstein handling everything baseball-related, with general manager Jed Hoyer serving under him. Crane Kenney handles the entire business side. Kenney previously oversaw both sides of the operation before the Cubs restructured.
If the Bears do go that route, they would look for a football czar who could then hire a general manager of his choosing.
