CHICAGO (CBS) -- Two students were hit by a school bus, and one was seriously injured on Friday afternoon outside Bartlett High School in the western suburbs.

Police said during after-school dismissal around 3:20 p.m., two students were running along a school bus that was pulling into the bus lane at Bartlett High School, 701 W. Schick Rd., when both of them fell and were hit by the bus.

A male student and a female student both were taken to local hospitals for treatment. Police said the female student suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

The male student suffered non-life-threatening injuries and taken to Ascension Saint Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates. The male student had a fractured forearm, according to a Bartlett fire official.

Brianna Burg, a junior at the high school, said she was leaving practice when she saw the scene.

"I saw the bus and the police there and the backpack in the street with all the stuff scattered," Burg said.

She attended Friday night's football game and learned, along with many others, of her classmates' injuries.

"That makes me feel horrible," Burg said. "It could be one of my peers. I don't even know who it is, and it's definitely going to be tragic for the family and people at our school, too."

One student said he was surprised the crash happened because dismissal is well supervised with many deans in place.

In an email to families and staff, the school reported that two students were involved in an "incident with a school bus," and that "emergency personnel responded quickly, and the students were attended to immediately." The principal said school officials were reviewing safety procedures to ensure continued protection for students.

Police said they were working with School District U-46 officials to investigate the incident.
