Bald Eagles Expected To Stay In Forest Preserve
ORLAND PARK, Ill. (CBS) -- Bald eagles have returned to a Cook County Forest Preserve south of Chicago for the first time in 100 years.
As WBBM Newsradio's John Cody reports, fisheries biologist Jim Phillips says the Tampier Lake area, at 131st Street and Wolf Road near Orland Park, proved perfect for the bald eagle pair and their one or two offspring.
"The area that they are in is a wildlife refuge. We don't allow fishing or boating in that area," he said.
Phillips says the bald eagles nested in a tall cottonwood, which provides a good perspective on food.
"They're going to go after what's predominantly out there, and what's close to the surface, and in this case, it's going to be shad and carp.
Phillips says the eagle family has left the nest but remains in the area around Saganashkee and McGinnis sloughs, but should return for the nesting season next year.
